SEMINAR FOR SONANGOL Wednesday,Jul 07,2010

A recent crew seminar in Odessa marked the latest stage in a growing relationship between V.Ships and key account client, Sonangol.

V.Ships' relationship with the National Oil Company of Angola dates back to 2007 with the first two vessels, Ngol Lucala and Ngol Lueji, entering management with V.Ships Cyprus the following year, with crew from V.Ships Odessa.

Based on the success of the initial period of operation, additional vessels were assigned by Sonangol to V.Ships Cyprus. By the end of July, 18 vessels in total will be managed with a combination of Ukrainian, Indian and Filipino seafarers.

2009 proved to be a very busy year given that nine vessels were taken over on the same day! Moreover, a number of technical and operation problems prompted discussion to find ways to enhance performance including a decision to hold a senior officers' seminar.

The seminar took place just outside of Odessa in late June. Senior executives from Sonangol, David Price, MD V.Ships Cyprus along with colleagues Marine Director, Nick Barham, Fleet Manager, Chris Burton Assistant Crewing Manager, Magdalena Niweck, together with Oleg Kravets from V.Ships Odessa, attended together with 55 Ukrainian officers.

The seminar focused on compliance with V.Ships procedures, including safe working practices and pollution prevention. Specific operational problems including logistical problems in supplying the fleet with stores and spares were also addressed, with attendees encouraged to air their views during debates with many conversations continuing during breaks. Prior to the official opening of proceedings by David, attendees also had the opportunity to see a demonstration of V.Ships Odessa's bridge and engine room simulators.

Commenting on the event, David Price stressed: "The seminar provided a valuable opportunity to discuss some important issues and determine ways of improving team working. We are keen that this isn't a one off and we have already started planning for a follow-on get together next year."
